Sparks Fly
Project type
Light Installation
Date
October 2024
Sparks Fly is an interactive light installation inspired by the Red String Theory, visually representing interconnectedness and how every person is tied together, meant to meet when the time is right. The installation invites viewers to participate in a dynamic visual experience.
Drawing from the theory that invisible threads connect people destined to meet, these connections are visualized through a network of colourful light paths that intersect and converge. Motion sensors at the base detect the presence and movement of users, activating the corresponding coloured light to travel through its unique pathway, creating individual streams of light motion. When multiple sensors are activated simultaneously, the lights moves through the network, crossing paths and creating a complex, colorful dance of light that guides the viewer’s gaze in various directions throughout the installation. this allows the installation to come “alive”, thriving on the energy and presence of the crowd.
The different coloured lights and pathways build on the narrative that every person has their own unique background and life path. Although we may be strangers or in separate groups, we are still connected in our distinct ways, highlighting the beauty of unexpected connections. The possibilities of combinations are endless, such that visuals are similar yet unique for every person. Each unique outcome is controlled by participants, creating a certain sense of intimacy between groups, bonding over the shared experience. Sensors are used to signify that not every action may be intentional, however it still contributes to the collective impact of society, allowing everyone to feel the significance of their presence and that they are precisely where they are meant to be at that moment.
The installation celebrates diversity and unity, emphasizing that people from all walks of life can come together to create something beautiful. It visually and emotionally represents the idea that every person’s presence has a role in everyone's story.
Ultimately, "Spark Fly" is about connection, encouraging interaction between users and the piece, as well as serving as a medium for users to connect with one another.
